Path to Membership

Whoever you are, we welcome you
Wherever you come from, we welcome you
Whomever you love, we welcome you

We welcome you to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent

Becoming a Unitarian Universalist
Are you searching for acceptance, and perhaps even encouragement, as you discover your intellectual or spiritual path? By the time you become a member here, you probably realize that the "path to membership" is an ongoing one. If you are searching for community and opportunities to work for peace and justice, your search may be over.

Newcomer Orientations
"New UU" classes are offered several times a year. The next class will be offered this fall during the regular Adult RE hour, 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning, beginning in October, 2009 for four consecutive Sundays. This fall, the class will be titled, "Everything you Wanted to Know About UUKent, But Were Afraid to Ask". If you choose not to join an orientation class, we encourage you to talk with our minister, the Rev. Melissa Carvill-Ziemer, or one of the Membership Team so that you can be certain that the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent is the place for you.

Membership Record Book
After completing the New UU class, those who feel the principles of this church are aligned with their own, are invited to sign the Membership Record Book as a symbol of commitment to this church. Membership is open to all people aged 14 or older, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or ability. Signings are held on the 3rd Sunday of each month, between services.

Welcoming New Members
We formally welcome new members twice a year in January and June, during a church service. New members are invited to a special congregational lunch in Fessenden after second service.

The Four Cornerstones
1. Regular attendance at Sunday Worship
2. Participation in the Life of the Church
3. Support of the Church with your time and financial resources
4. Participation in the democratic process of the Church.

Our Principles

There are seven principles which Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person
  • Justice, equity and compassion in human relations
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part
