Library About our Library The doors of the Library of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent opened in November of 2007 using funds from an anonymous donor. Earlier that year, a Library Action Team (LAT) was formed to orchestrate the library's opening. Some of the initial endowment was used for administrative supplies and for an initial purchase of a limited number of books. The remainder of the endowment will be used as needed over the next few years. It is important to make it last as long as possible, because there is no plan to replace funds as they are used. During the initial planning stages, the LAT determined (after formal inquiries from the congregation) that the Library would consist of books in eight categories. These categories are:
The Library has been fortunate to receive dozens of donations from friends and members of the Church, and each category mentioned above has a representative of worthy books. The LAT has also purchased books in each category. In the most recent LAT meeting, it was determined that certain categories need additional books to be well represented. It was also determined that the LAT would develop a “wish list” from the available literature and present this list to the congregation and friends of the Church. It is our hope that individuals or committees will determine from time to time that it would be a good thing to buy a book or books for the Library. Donations can also be made to memorialize a loved one or simply in the spirit of generosity. Donors' names and, if appropriate, the name of the person to whom the book is dedicated will appear in a permanent bookplate inserted inside the book's cover. Donations are, of course, also tax deductible. The current “wish list” follows this page. Buying Books for the Library You may purchase books directly for your own use and then donate them afterwards to the library. Publisher information and costs are included in the list that follows. There is a shelf in the library dedicated to donations. We ask that you use the sticky notes located there to identify yourself so that we can send you a thank you letter. If you wish to purchase a book directly for the library, and have the LAT procure it for you, please contact Lynn Kindsvatter.
