Sunday, August 5        Copy Store Jesus 2: The Second Coming

Saul Flanner and Kathy Walker are back in the pulpit to offer a sequel to their 2008 Service, “Confessions of a Copy Store Jesus”, in which Saul observed that each of us, in our day-to-day lives, are in a constant state of ministry to others, whether we realize it or not. For many of us, our work is a big part of our day-to-day lives. Last year, Saul’s career underwent a drastic transformation, from retail copy store employee to stay-at-home dad. In this service he’ll share what he’s learned and examine the ways his spiritual identity as a UU has helped him with this transition. Will he have the audacity to once again compare himself to Jesus Christ? Only one way to find out. See you there!

Three More Sundays of Summer RE ~~ August 5, 12 and 19 at 11:15
Our program for this summer, is “Stories that Inspire”, an all-ages, story-based program that will happen in Fessenden Hall at 11:15.  This Sunday’s story will be “Thunder Cake” by Patricia Polacco.  The session will be co-led by Kristina Spaude and Christopher Gargoline.  There will be no Time for All Ages during the worship services over the summer, so children should be dropped off in Fessenden Hall where the session starts promptly at 11:15.   Nursery care will be available during both the 9:30 and 11:15 services.

Volunteers Needed to Provide meals for OMD Youth/Adult Committee Meeting

Our church will be hosting the annual summer meeting of our district’s YAC, which is the group of youth and adults who plan and host all the wonderful district conferences that take place throughout the year.  Since our facility is not large enough to host a full conference, hosting this small event (no more than 50 youth and 10+ adults) is our way of supporting the OMD youth community of which many of our own youth participate and serve in leadership roles.

I am forming a task force which will provide the meals.  The more folks who volunteer, the lighter the load, so ideally, you will only be asked to help prepare one meal. Please let me know if you are interested in helping the weekend of August 17-19.  Let me know at [email protected].

Please join us for Spiritual Cinema on Friday, August 10 at 7:00 PM. We will watch the motion picture, “Contact” (1997) which was written by the late Dr. Carl Sagan. Dan Flippo has volunteered to screen the movie in his home and has room for at least 14 people. Please RSVP to Dan.   You can visit our website for additional information including the movie trailer.

New UU Classes in August
Everything you wanted to know about the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent in particular and Unitarian Universalism in general, but were afraid to ask.  Well, maybe not everything, but we try to give you an overview, a starting point.  Some history of both, some organizational details. Come join the conversation.  If you’re curious about membership, this is the place to be.

Part 1 will be on Sunday, Aug 12, from 9-11 am. Part 2 will be on Sunday, Aug 19, from 9-10:30 am.  You may attend one or both.  Different topics will be covered in each.  We will gather at the Annex, the yellow house next to the church. If you have any questions, contact Claudia Miller or Marion Yeagler .

The Book Group will be meeting on Tuesday, August 14 at 6 pm in the home of Annie Brightbill.  For those wishing to carpool, we will meet at the church at 5:15 pm.  Annie will be making one of her delicious dinners for us. This month we are reading The Paris Wife, a novel by Paula McLain.  A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, The Paris Wife captures a remarkable period of time and a love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley. In September we will be reading Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards. If you have any questions you may contact Bonnie Harper.

Membership Committee Meets
Wednesday, August 15th, the Membership Committee will meet in Fessenden Hall at 6:30 pm.  We will hear and discuss a summary of the Assessment Report that relates to our committee’s work, formulate ideas about our contribution to the newly forming Hospitality Team, prepare for the revision of our Membership Directory, make plans for the Ministry Fair, AND MORE!!  As you can see, we have much excitement happening in the Membership Committee!  All current committee members are urged to attend.  I extend a special invitation to any and all others to join our busy and fun committee.  We need you!  Light refreshments will be served.  Bring your calendars, please.  Contact Claudia Miller or Marion Yeagler with questions.
